Step 1: Complete a Cable and Fiber Optic Technician Apprenticeship Program

Aspiring cable and fiber optic technicians may participate in an apprenticeship program to learn about the trade. An apprenticeship usually consists of both classroom instruction and on-the-job training. The apprentice's employer provides both of these, and participants are paid for their training time. Eligibility requirements for apprenticeship participation usually include being 17-18 years old, possessing a high school diploma and passing pre-employment drug testing.

Apprenticeship programs are offered through state agencies as well as through private organizations, though they may not be available everywhere. Programs can take 3-5 years to complete and include 480-900 hours of classroom instruction, along with 7,000-8,000 hours of on-the-job training. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, computer hardware engineers brought home an average of $57.07 an hour in 2016, and earned an average salary of $118,700 per year. Hardware engineers employed by professional, business, political and other organizations earned more than those in any other industry, an average of $100 or more per hour. Average hourly pay by state ranged from a low of $33.81 in Arkansas to a high of $65.69 in California.

Systems Software Engineers

Systems software engineers design the operating systems and interface systems that allow computers to properly function. As of 2016, the BLS reports that systems software engineers earned an average hourly wage of $53.17 and an average annual salary of $110,590. Half of all systems software engineers working in the United States earned between $40.03 and $64.41 per hour, with the highest-paid 10 percent earning $78.47 or more per hour. Geographically, average hourly earnings ranged from a low of $31.43 in North Dakota to a high of $61.92 in California.

Software Applications Developers

Applications developers are software engineers who design games and other programs. According to the BLS, they tended to earn slightly less than hardware and systems software engineers: an average of $50.14 an hour and $104,300 a year as of 2016. The highest average pay by industry was reported by audio and video equipment manufacturing, which paid software applications developers an average of $60.86 an hour. Wyoming reported the lowest average wage by state for this occupation, $33.04 an hour, while Washington reported the highest, $62.23.

comptia a+ salary canada

Is CompTIA A+ the standard entry level IT cert in Canada, or is there another one that I’m unaware of? I only ask this because they list the price of the exams for quite a few different countries, but don’t include Canada.

Also, they state that the exams generally retire after 3 years or so, and the current ones came out in 2015. Would my certification be useless, less useful, or just as useful if I were to obtain it now, rather than after the new exams are released?

The prices are in USD, which then convert to CAD when you purchase them. CompTIA certifications are recognized in Canada. I live in Canada (Ontario) and have a few myself. I buy the vouchers from the CompTIA marketplace, get a voucher emailed, then book the exam through PearsonVUE. My Network+ certification helped me open new opportunities job wise as did the A+ a few years ago.

It doesn't matter when the exam retires, once you obtain the certification despite the exam code you are still certified from your exam pass date for three years. If there are two exam codes overlapping it is sometimes better to study for the older one as there will be a lot more resources but that is entirely up to you.

Great advice about studying for the older version. Be careful of the approaching deadline, especially if the exams are in two parts like A+ or Linux+. However, CompTIA may have phased out irrelevant material or cumbersome questions on the newer exam. However, as button_R said, there will be more resources to study from.
